Food Safety Caucus To Address Consumer Concerns

Statement of CSPI Food Safety Director Caroline Smith DeWaal

April 8, 2003

The formation of the Food Safety Caucus means that consumer interests in food safety will be better served than ever before. Consumers face numerous emerging threats today, from bioterrorism to mad cow disease, that are not adequately addressed under existing laws.

We certainly wouldn’t fight today’s wars with antique weapons from Theodore Roosevelt’s administration. Nor should we try to assure the safety of today’s food supply with antique laws that are nearly a hundred years old. It is time to bring our turn-of-the-century food safety laws in line with 21st century food safety challenges.

I congratulate Representatives Rosa DeLauro and Sherrod Brown for their longstanding leadership on food safety issues and for forming this bipartisan Food Safety Caucus.
