Soda Sales Continue Slide; Good News for Public Health Says CSPI

Statement of CSPI Executive Director Michael F. Jacobson

July 25, 2013

What's good for Coke and Pepsi is not what's good for the country.

In fact, it is unambiguously good news for public health that non-diet soda volumes are continuing their 15-year slide—at Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Dr Pepper Snapple Group. It signals that consumers are really getting the message—that that one of the most important things you can do to improve your health is to switch to water or other no- or low-calorie drinks.

Sugar drinks are a leading contributor to obesity and also promote diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems. These big three soda companies should see the writing on the wall and accelerate the pace with which they shift their beverage lines in a lower-calorie direction.
