House Continues Partisan Attack on Children's Health

Statement of CSPI Nutrition Policy Director Margo G. Wootan

May 29, 2014

It's rich to watch House Republicans shed tears for the challenges our schools face feeding healthy lunches to kids. These are the same folks who think the school lunch program provides a "full stomach and an empty soul," that the kids participating in the program should sweep the floor, and that pizza is a vegetable. Their attack on healthy meals is out of touch with the overwhelming majority of families who want healthier food for children.

The House waiver proposal is an attack on kids' health dressed up as a favor to schools, when in fact 90 percent of schools are already meeting the new healthy lunch standards, helping kids eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Perhaps it's more a favor to the pizza companies, French fry makers, steel can manufacturers, and any number of corporate special interests that think the school lunch program is their own ATM.
