Nestlé Announces Support for FDA's Sodium Reduction Targets

Statement of CSPI President Michael F. Jacobson

May 5, 2016

The Food and Drug Administration’s efforts to reduce Americans’ risk of heart disease and stroke by reducing salt in our foods received another boost from industry today with Nestlé’s announcement of its support for the agency. Just last month, Mars called on the FDA to release its draft voluntary targets for sodium reduction in processed and restaurant foods, which are the source of more than 75 percent of the sodium Americans consume. Leadership by companies like Nestlé and Mars is valuable. We hope that other companies will show their commitment to their customers’ health by supporting FDA action.
