Consumer Group to Seek FTC Action Against Deceptive Gerber Baby-Food Ads

WHAT:

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) will hold a press conference to release a petition it is filing with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

CSPI is asking the FTC to halt "a pervasive campaign of misleading advertising" by Gerber, the baby-food giant that controls some 70 percent of the U.S. market.

Copies of an informational packet on baby-food marketing deceptions -- which CSPI is distributing to 20,000 U.S. pediatricians -- will also be available at the press conference.

"Gerber has made it an article of faith that its baby foods are nutritionally equal -- or even superior -- to competing brands. In fact, many of Gerber's products are watered down with cheap fillers and some contain only half as much real food as other brands," Michael Jacobson, CSPI 's executive director, will charge.

"Gerber is robbing babies of nutrition, and cheating their mothers and fathers out of millions of dollars. It's time for them to cease and desist this disgraceful corporate conduct, or at the least, to stop lying about it in their advertising."
